EPA and DHA are among the physiologically most important long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (LC-PUFAs). They are structural components of phospholipids in cell membranes—particularly in cardiac muscle, nervous tissue, and the retina—where they influence membrane fluidity, signal transduction, and receptor function.

Because the human body can synthesize EPA and DHA only to a limited extent from the plant-derived precursor α-linolenic acid (ALA), direct intake through diet or supplementation is of central importance. The endogenous conversion rate of ALA to EPA and DHA is also competitively inhibited by a high intake of omega-6 fatty acids in the diet (e.g., from sunflower, corn germ, or soybean oil).

EPA is a key precursor of eicosanoids (e.g., prostaglandins and thromboxanes) as well as specialized pro-resolving mediators (resolvins, protectins, and maresins), which are involved in the resolution of inflammatory processes. DHA plays a crucial role in neurons and photoreceptors and is an essential component of synaptic membranes.

Vitamin E complements the formula as a fat-soluble antioxidant and protects the highly oxidation-sensitive polyunsaturated fatty acids in lipoproteins and cell membranes from lipid peroxidation. This not only stabilizes the fish oil itself but also helps reduce oxidative stress at the cellular level.
